Police Chase Ends in Traffic Crash and Arrest of Devonte Wright in Waco

A 24-year-old motorist was arrested in the Waco area of Texas after leading police through a chase that ended in a car wreck, endangering the lives of two children in the process. The incident took place on Wednesday, April 22, as confirmed in the accident reports.

As reported, officers responding to a series of shots fired at the Trendwood Apartments spotted the suspect’s vehicle, a silver Dodge sedan which matched the description of the one the shooter fled in.

The officer who noticed the car tried to pull it over at the intersection of Turner Street and Lenox Street, but the motorist, identified as Devonte Wright, failed to oblige.

Police said Wright fled the stop point at a high rate of speed, with patrol officers on his trail.

After leading the officers on a pursuit through East Waco Drive and west of Brazos, the sedan crashed into an electric pole mounted at the intersection of East Waco Drive and Novelty street. No one was harmed in the collision.

Following the crash, the suspect reportedly abandoned his vehicle and tried to flee on foot. He was intercepted by the police a block away.

Officers discovered two juveniles in the back seat of the fleeing vehicle. They also found marijuana in Wright’s possession.

An adult passenger in the front passenger seat cooperated with police and was released upon interrogation. Family members took the juveniles to an area hospital to ascertain their health condition post-crash.

Although investigators confirmed that neither Wright nor his vehicle was linked to the shooting, he was taken into custody on a long list of felony and misdemeanor charges.

He is being held at the McLennan County Jail on suspicion of evading police in a car, evading on foot, tampering with evidence, possession of marijuana, and two counts of abandoning or endangering a child.

In addition, police discovered that the felon had at least 18 outstanding traffic warrants, the accident reports affirmed.
