Authorities: Marc Alexander Killed, 4 Law Enforcement Officials Injured In Wreck Near Dc

Multiple law enforcement officials responding to a report of a crash outside Washington, D.C., on Tuesday were injured and bystander was killed when a suspected impaired driver barreled into the crash scene during the investigation.

Marc Alexander, 60, of Upper Marlboro, Md., died after he was struck by a vehicle at about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday on Maryland 202, Maryland State Police said in a press release. A state trooper and three police officers also suffered injuries in the wreck.

Authorities said Trooper Brandon White was dispatched to the scene of a crash at 10 p.m. on Maryland 202 at Campus Way South in Largo.  A suspected intoxicated driver, Victoria Cross, 59, of Lothian, Md., had apparently rear-ended a vehicle driven by Alexander, according to the release.

At about 10:10 p.m., White was parked in his squad vehicle with his emergency lights on when a southbound sedan struck the trooper’s vehicle. The squad car was pushed into three county police officers who were assisting at the scene, the release stated.

The sedan that struck White’s vehicle kept driving, eventually striking Alexander, who was standing outside his vehicle, authorities said. Alexander was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

The release said White and all three officers were transported to Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center, where they are being treated. The driver of the sedan that struck White’s vehicle, Iretha Spriggs, 38, of Capital Heights, Md., also was injured, and was transported to Medstar, authorities said.

Troopers “observed signs of possible impairment involving Spriggs and are continuing their investigation into that potential,” according to the release.
