Hit-And-Run Collision Kills Four, Injures Four Others On Pomona Freeway

Four people were killed after the SUV they were in was sideswiped by a car, causing it to overturn down two embankments on the 60 Freeway in Pomona early Saturday morning. The tragic accident was the dramatic conclusion to a night out for a group of family and friends from Lake Elsinore who had been celebrating at Universal Studios Hollywood. Authorities did not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

Just after 5 a.m., the group of eight were riding in a 2003 Ford Explorer that seats seven. As they were eastbound on the 60 Freeway near Reservoir Street in Pomona, the driver lost control and the SUV rolled over, California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said. Six people were thrown from the SUV. The driver, identified as Elena Chavez-Lopez, told authorities that a white newer-model car hit the left side of her SUV.

Four were killed and the four others were taken to hospitals in “moderate to major” conditions, according to the CHP. Authorities suspect that six of the eight passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. At least one of the people killed was wearing a seatbelt.

The victims killed were identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office as Noemi Herrera, 21, Elba Rosales, 26, Luis Herrera, 29, and Gerardo Herrera, 49.

With help from the Pomona Police Department, authorities searched the area for a white car, but had not located one as of Saturday evening.

Mourners gathered Saturday night to leave candles at the crash scene.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account with the goal of raising $15,000 for medical and funeral expenses, you may access the link by clicking here.
