The Tempe Police Department is probing a fatal crash that occurred at Mill Avenue and University Drive in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Authorities say a man and woman were crossing the street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when they were hit by a vehicle heading westbound on University.
The woman has been identified by relatives as 42-year-old Kelly Scott. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police say the man suffered only minor injuries but did not release his name.
Investigators say the driver responsible for the accident did not stop at the scene. The vehicle was later found near 52nd Street and Broadway Road by Tempe police officers.
The unnamed driver was arrested, and police say impairment did not appear to be a factor.
Investigations into the accident will continue.
Meanwhile, Scott’s uncle Kieran Scott remembered her as an entertaining person who was bubbly, vivacious, and loving.
She moved to Arizona from southern California about five years ago. Though she never had children of her own, her uncle said she was involved in the lives of the children in her family.
He said she was always watching the Disney Channel with the kids, singing songs and bringing toys.
According to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Crash Stats 2018, half of pedestrian accidents occur during daylight hours or at dusk or dawn. However, around 73 percent of the pedestrians killed on the state’s roads are were struck at night in 2018.
That’s when vehicles tend to be traveling faster and it’s more difficult to spot people walking on the street.
