Driver In Menominee Crash That Killed Derek Bryant Waives Arraignment

A man facing multiple felony charges for his roll in a two-vehicle wreck that killed a 29-year-old Vulcan resident waived arraignment this week during a court appearance.

Kane Richard, 20, faces charges in District Court with reckless driving causing death and operating under the influence of death, according to local prosecutors. Each of the charges is a felony carrying maximum sentences of more than one decade in prison upon conviction.

Richard’s charges stem from an Oct. 21 crash in Lake Township that killed 29-year-old Derek Bryant. Authorities said Richard ran a stop sign at the intersection of Menominee County roads 356 and 577, striking another vehicle.

Bryant was a passenger in the second vehicle. He was ejected during the crash and sustained fatal injuries.

Richard also suffered serious injuries that required prolonged hospitalization. Investigators later determined Richard had THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, as well as prescription drugs in his system at the time of the collision.

Richard is due back in court for a hearing March 16. He is currently serving a 12-month jail sentence on charges unrelated to the crash.

Michigan State Police, the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department and Menominee police participated in the investigation.
