A Travis County Sheriff’s Department deputy was killed in a multi-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning, county officials confirmed.
Christopher Korzilius, 32, died in the crash, which occurred just before 7 a.m. on FM 2244, according to authorities. At least one other person was injured in the crash.
The Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services department was called to the 7700 block of FM 2244 at about 6:50 a.m. to respond to a multi-vehicle crash. Authorities said Korzilius, who was a senior deputy working in the department’s VICE unit, had collided with another vehicle, causing his unmarked department vehicle to roll off the road and onto its roof.
Korzilius was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Another person, whom authorities did not identify publicly, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Additional details about what led to the crash weren’t immediately released. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.
Korzilius reportedly joined the sheriff’s department in 2016.
“Our hearts are broken,” sheriff’s department officials said in a social media post. “Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date. Thank you for your kindness and support during this difficult time.”
