A 27-year-old man is dead and three people were taken to local hospitals after a rollover crash in Gregg County, Texas on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Jose Nahum Santamaria-Quintanilla of Baton Rouge.

Troopers responded to the crash on I-20, about three miles west of Kilgore, around 3 a.m.

Preliminary investigations showed that the driver of a Honda Civic was going eastbound at unsafe speeds and the roadway was wet.

The car hydroplaned and veered off the roadway onto the grass between I-20 and the 583. The vehicle then hit a tree and rolled.

Officials said the driver was 20-year-old Hesler Alberto Quintanilla-Rodriguez, a resident of Baton Rouge. He was taken to CHRISTUS Good Shepard Medical Center – Longview and was said to be in serious condition.

His passenger, Jose Nahum Santamaria-Quintanilla, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Jameson and then taken to Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore.

Two other passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were transported to CHRISTUS Good Shepard Medical Center – Longview. They were listed as in stable condition.

They were identified as 29-year-old Baton Rouge resident Heydy Morales, 29, and a ten-year-old male. It was not immediately clear how the four were connected.

The crash remains under investigation.

Excessive speed is responsible for around 30 percent of all traffic accidents in the United States. It reduces drivers’ reaction time and increases the likelihood of fatalities.
