Among the six most highly populated states, Texas comes second only to Florida in the number of deaths per capita.
Between 2010 and 2018, there were more road deaths in Texas than in any other US state.
Furthermore, between November 7, 2000, and November 8, 2019, at least one person died in a crash every day.
There is an ongoing effort by the Texas Transportation Commission to end all road fatalities by 2050.
Over a two-year period, the commission is expected to spend an additional $600 million on efforts in support of this goal.
These include upgrading guardrails, widening roads, and improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
