Authorities have arrested a man nearly three months after a fatal wreck involving an airport shuttle in Phoenix.
David G. Arteaga, 49, of Phoenix, was arrested Thursday on charges of endangerment, assault and second-degree murder, according to police. Online court records don’t list any upcoming hearings.
Authorities said Arteaga was driving east on Washington Street on Dec. 31 when he struck an airport shuttle at the intersection with 32nd Street. Surveillance footage allegedly showed that Arteaga ran a red light just before he struck the van.
The van’s 39-year-old driver and two passengers, a 74-year-old man and Kathleen Watson, 75, were transported to an area hospital for treatment, according to police. Watson later died from her injuries, while the other two suffered minor wounds, authorities said.
Arteaga remained at the scene after the crash and was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Court documents showed that Arteaga’s blood-alcohol content was 0.192%, more than twice the legal driving limit of 0.08%.
Investigators said Arteaga’s truck was traveling nearly 60 mph at the moment of impact. He reportedly had to undergo multiple surgeries as a result of the trauma sustained in the wreck.
It’s unclear whether any additional charges are forthcoming.
