Ferdinand Slayden Killed In Bullard Crash

Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle crash Wednesday evening in Smith County that claimed the life of a Flint man.

Ferdinand A. Slayden III, 37, died at the scene of the crash, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and no additional injures were listed in car accident reports.

Troopers said Slayden was driving south on FM 346 near Bullard at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when he approached a curve in the roadway. Slayden reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to go off the roadway, crash into a culvert and roll over.

The vehicle then struck a tree, finally coming to a rest on its side, according to car accident reports. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Slayden was pronounced dead before he could be transported to an area hospital for treatment, authorities said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the crash, and it’s unclear from car accident reports whether factors like inattentive driving or intoxication might have contributed to the incident.

However, troopers did say they believe Slayden was traveling at an unsafe speed when he lost control of his vehicle. It wasn’t clear Friday whether authorities plan to release additional information about the wreck.

Slayden’s body was transported to a funeral home in Tyler, authorities reported. Troopers did not say whether an autopsy has been ordered.
