Drake Yerbic Dies in Illinois River Incident

A man has died in a drowning incident that took place at the Illinois River. The body of the deceased was recovered from the river on Tuesday, April 21 as per preliminary accident reports. The unfortunate victim of the incident was identified by the Fulton County Coroner’s Office as Drake Yerbic, 20, of Canton.

According to the details shared by the authorities, the boat incident took place when Yerbic and a friend were fishing in the river. The duo launched their boat from Liverpool and continued to fish until they reached the mile marker 132, which is about four miles from the village.

At this point, both stopped by the western bank of the river in order to bowfish. As they were bowfishing, the boat got loose and drifted into the water. Yerbic dived into the river in order to locate and retrieve the boat. However, he didn’t surface after submerging.

His friend, standing by the bank, called for help. The incident was reported around 2 p.m. It took the law enforcement agencies a while to reach the remote site as no road directly led to it. A number of agencies responded to the incident. These include Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the Copperas Creek Fire Protection District’s dive team. Using SONAR, the law enforcement and other personnel were able to locate Yerbic’s body around 7:30 p.m. He was then pronounced dead on the scene.

Preliminary investigations reveal that no foul play was involved. Subsequent accident reports may shed more light on how Yerbic lost his life.
