Obaidah Gresham Fatally Struck By Dump Truck In Auburn Township

Authorities have identified the woman killed Monday morning when she was struck by an allegedly intoxicated dump truck driver at a Sangamon County gas station.

Obaidah Gresham, 62, of Auburn, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the crash occurred, according to the Illinois State Police. No other injuries were reported in connection to the incident, which was reported at about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The dump truck driver, Bennie L. Jackson, 43, of Auburn, was arrested the next day on several charges, including three counts of aggravated driving under the influence, reckless homicide and official misconduct of a public employee, authorities said. He also was cited with not wearing a seatbelt, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence.

Jackson will need a drunk driving attorney to represent him during upcoming court proceedings.

Authorities said Jackson, an Auburn Township dump truck driver, lost control of his vehicle on a curve on Illinois 4 near Lincoln Street at about 11:30 a.m. Monday. The dump truck went through a ditch, crossed Lincoln Street and went into a gas station parking lot, where he struck Gresham.

Gresham was pronounced dead a little more than one hour after the incident, according to troopers.

Sangamon County officials said Jackson had methamphetamine and cocaine in his system at the time of the incident. He is being held at the Sangamon County Jail on a $750,000 bond.

If Jackson has not already done so, he will need to hire a drunk driving attorney to represent him during his arraignment, set for Thursday.
