The food delivery driver accused of running down a Chicago restaurant worker Friday evening after an altercation over the business’ social distancing restrictions has turned himself in to police, according to authorities.
The Chicago Police Department did not disclose the identify of the driver, who worked for Grubhub. He is considered a person of interest in the Friday evening incident in which 24-year-old Bijan C. Early was seriously injured, authorities reported over the weekend.
Police have said charges are pending. If criminal charges are brought for or citations issued, the driver likely will need to seek representation from a car injury attorney.
Authorities said they were called to Mrs. T’s Southern Fried Chicken, a restaurant on North Broadway Street, at about 6 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a hit-and-run crash.
Witnesses said the Grubhub driver arrived at the restaurant and attempted to enter. However, he was told to wait outside because of the eatery’s social-distancing guidelines, authorities said.
Witnesses said the driver kicked the door, prompting an altercation with Early and her mother, the restaurant’s owner. Restaurant officials called the police and attempted to keep the driver at the scene until they arrived, but he allegedly sped off, running over Early in the process.
According to local media outlets, Grubhub officials immediately terminated the driver’s contract and provided identifying information to police.
It still is unclear when and if charges or citations will be issued in response to the incident. If charges are filed, a car injury attorney will be needed to help the driver navigate the criminal justice system.
