A man accused of crashing a stolen vehicle into a police car and a parked vehicle before causing a multi-vehicle wreck while fleeing authorities Wednesday in Wilmette has been arrested.
Mansfield Wallace, 48, of Evanston, was arrested shortly after the brief pursuit, which occurred at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Wilmette Police Department. No injuries were listed as a result of the crash on car accident reports, but the crashes caused significant damage to multiple vehicles.
Police said they were called to a pharmacy on Green Bay Road at about 5 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of a shoplifter. The first officer at the scene noticed a person matching the suspect’s description sitting in a black vehicle, authorities said.
The officer checked the vehicle and discovered it had been reported stolen, according to car accident reports. As police attempted to speak with the vehicle’s occupant, identified later as Wallace, he sped out of the parking, striking a police vehicle and another parked car.
Wallace continued driving until he ran a red light at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Linden Avenue, causing a multi-vehicle crash, according to car accident reports. His vehicle finally was stopped in the 400 block of Green Bay Road and Wallace was arrested.
Police said Wallace currently is serving parole for an unrelated theft conviction. Additional charges in connection to Wednesday’s incident are pending, according to the Wilmette Police Department.
