Family members watched on Tuesday as a father and son met their deaths in a motorcycle accident in San Antonio, Texas.
The San Antonio Police Department confirmed accident reports that Reinerio Lopez and his son Franklin Lopez motorcycle were killed.
The accident occurred around 12:20 a.m on General Hudnell Drive near Cupples Road.
It is understood that the 36-year-old Reinerio was operating the bike while his 15-year-old son was on the rear.
Reinerio apparently lost control of the motorcycle when he reached a bend in the road and the motorcycle crashed into a wall.
Relatives who were on another bike saw what happened and called for help.
Emergency medical services personnel attempted to save the Lopezes’ lives but they both succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
SAPD investigators confirmed that the father and son were wearing helmets and the father didn’t appear to be speeding.
The authorities didn’t indicate what led Reinerio to lose control of his vehicle, but these details could be released in subsequent accident reports.
A motorcyclist dies on Texas’ roads every day, on average.
In 2019, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recorded more than 7,500 motorcycle-involved crashes. Of this number, 406 led to a fatality and among the victims, 46 percent were not wearing helmets.
May is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. At the start of the month the Texas Department of Public Safety and TxDOT reminded the public that motorcyclists and motorcycles are often in greater danger.
