Men Indicted on Charges in Crash That Killed Howard Wright


The three men who were arrested following the death of Howard Wright in February have been formally charged by a grand jury in Lubbock County.

Accident reports at the time said Wright was turning onto Slide Road in his Nissan Murano when he was hit by a southbound Dodge Charger driven by Xavier Montalvo.

Now, Montalvo, 20; Luis Salinas, 24; and Anthony Martin, 28, have been charged with racing on a highway causing death.

In addition, Montalvo is accused of recklessly causing the death of the 69-year-old Wright by street racing.

According to court documents, the men were associated with the Muscle Mayhem car club.

The three were illegally racing on Slide Road on February 24, 2020.

According to police reports, Montalvo, Martin, and Salinas started a drag race around 69th Street.

The crash occurrd at 75th Street shortly before 3 p.m., accident reports stated.

According to the arrest warrant, Montalvo’s vehicle was the one that collided with Wright’s vehicle.

He was going at 94 miles per hour when the crash occurred, based on information obtained by the Lubbock Police Department.

Slide Road has a speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

Wright’s family is suing the three men and the car club for wrongful death. They are seeking more than $1 million in damages in a civil suit.

The lawsuit said the collision was violent and it caused Howard significant personal injuries that resulted in his death.

It also claimed that prior to his death, Wright sustained pain, medical liabilities, suffering, and mental anguish.
