On Tuesday, June 2nd, the Decatur Police Department took into custody the man who drove through a red light and caused a fatal accident in the Decatur area of Illinois. 24-year-old Demetric J. Dixon is facing criminal charges and would need representation from a drunk driving attorney.
In a press release, the police said that the young man is facing charges of aggravated driving under the influence causing death and leaving the scene of an accident where there’s a death. The accident Dixon is responsible for took place in the early hours of Monday, June 1st, at approximately 2:45 a.m.
The suspect was traveling with four others in a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu when he disobeyed the stop sign on the roadway where Water Street intersects with Grand Avenue. The act took him into the path of a fully-loaded tractor-trailer, and they collided.
The collision led to severe injuries for the four passengers identified as 19-year-old Brittany King, 20-year-old Keitsha Bowman, 23-year-old Shonez Harper, and 23-year-old Armani Cooper. The quartet made it to the Decatur Memorial Hospital, where medical personnel later pronounced them dead.
The police said video footage showed Dixon behind the wheel of the Chevrolet at the time of the accident, but he left on foot afterward. They were unable to locate him until he turned up at the DMH to treat his wounds. The doctors found that he had a BAC of .159, and the police estimated it near .25 when he crashed.
The DPD did not release any additional information. Those involved in DUI-related accidents should seek the advice of a drunk driving attorney.
