The Phoenix Police Department in Arizona says a driver who ran a red light caused a fatal crash on Thursday night.
The victim is 20-year-old Jared Carillo.
Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. at the corner of 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road.
According to Sergeant Mercedes Fortune, an SUV was traveling south on 35th Avenue and the driver ran a red light before colliding with a compact car that was going west on Buckeye.
The impact sent both vehicles crashing into the traffic light and a water control box.
Carillo was the driver of the compact car and he died at the scene.
Police said the driver of the SUV was a 27-year-old man and he stayed on the scene to cooperate with officers. His name was not released.
Fortune said the man showed signs of impairment and investigators are awaiting a toxicology report to determine how they will charge him.
In the meantime, the investigation will continue.
In Arizona, motorists are prohibited from driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or more. They can also be arrested and charged if they are impaired in any way because of drugs or alcohol.
Arizona doesn’t have a specific vehicular homicide or intoxication manslaughter law like some states do. However, someone suspected of causing a vehicle-related death can be charged under general homicide laws.
Regardless of the criminal charges, Carillo’s family can seek advice from a car accident lawyer on whether they are eligible for compensation.
