On Friday, July 3rd, the Peoria County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died in an accident in Peoria, Illinois. Mark D. Russell, 62, fell 12-feet to his death from a scaffolding while painting a building.
The accident report disclosed that the victim was painting at the former Trefzger’s building at 3504 N. Prospect Avenue when he fell at about 6:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 2nd. When officers with the Peoria Police arrived at the scene, they found Russell on the ground in the parking lot on the south side of the building.
The coroner said that the man suffered from multiple blunt force trauma injuries and head trauma from the fall. Bystanders performed CPR on Russell before the medics conveyed him to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in critical condition. He died at about 8:08 p.m. while receiving treatment. There won’t be an autopsy as the police do not suspect foul play.
Scaffoldings are generally safe, and they are more productive to work with than ladders. But they can lead to accidents, which sometimes have fatal consequences if they are not correctly fixed. Thus, those who wear the equipment to work must ensure that they assemble it correctly under a competent person’s supervision.
Have safe ladder access as workers should never climb on braces or structural frames. Use scaffold-grade lumber when creating platforms, and install guards, and toeboards on all scaffolds that are two feet or two frames above ground. Additionally, ensure the structure can support four times the maximum intended load, including its weight, and have a competent person train all personnel in safe scaffolding use.
