A woman lost her life in a multi-vehicle crash that took place in the Jo Daviess County. The fatal accident occurred on Friday, July 17. In addition to the female deceased, another woman sustained minor injuries in the incident. The deceased was identified as Mary Morhardt, 54 as per the preliminary accident reports.
According to the details shared by the authorities, the incident occurred when a vehicle crossed the center line and came into the path of the oncoming traffic. The said vehicle was traveling in the eastbound lanes of the U.S. Route 20 at Devils Ladder Road. Authorities identified the driver of the vehicle as Beverly Kloss, 74.
As Kloss left the eastbound lanes and entered into the westbound lanes, her vehicle collided with another vehicle. Nancy Jargo was identified as the driver of this second vehicle. After Kloss’ vehicle collided with Jargo’s vehicle, Jargo lost control and veered into the eastbound lanes where her car collided with a third vehicle. Mary Morhardt was the driver of this third vehicle.
Following the collision, Morhardt’s vehicle veered away from the roadway and entered a culvert. Morhardt sustained critical injuries and attempts to revive her failed. She was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident.
A fourth vehicle was also involved which collided with Jargo’s vehicle. However, this final collision wasn’t very impactful. Jargo sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, trying to determine exactly how and why Kloss lost control of the vehicle in the first place. Subsequent accident reports may reveal whether a medical emergency or another factor was the cause.
