Michael Guzman Identified as Pedestrian Killed in Patrol Car Crash

A pedestrian who lost his life after being hit by a South Beloit patrol car over the weekend has now been identified by the authorities. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, August 23 as per the initial accident reports. Authorities have now identified the victim as Michael Guzman, 35, of Rockford.

According to the details shared by the South Beloit Police, the accident took place on Illinois Route 2, more commonly known as Blackhawk Boulevard. In the early morning hours of Sunday, officer Sawyer Kurth was on the patrol. As Kurth drove across the Whittemore Drive on the Blackhawk Boulevard, his vehicle collided with Michael Guzman at around 2:30 a.m.

Guzman was walking on the roadway at the time. When the patrol car hit him, Guzman sustained critical injuries. He was taken to the Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford. Attempts were made to revive him but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 3:20 a.m.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigations. The focus of the external investigations is to understand precisely how the incident occurred. At the same time, the Sheriff’s Office is also conducting investigations to find out whether officer Kurth was following all the standard protocols and procedures when the incident occurred.

Authorities are also trying to determine if Michael Guzman was sober when he was walking on the roadway. Winnebago County Coroner’s Office is waiting for the toxicology report which is due within an estimated three weeks. Subsequent accident reports may show the results of the report and confirm if alcohol was a factor.
