Jose Palma Killed in a Solo Crash on County Highway 10; Felipe Almaraz Injured

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed in a solo crash on Highway 10, Pike County, Illinois. On Wednesday, September 23rd, sheriff’s officials disclosed the victim’s name as Jose Luis Parra Palma, a 30-year-old resident of Monroe City, Missouri.

The man drove the vehicle involved in the crash, and his passenger, Felipe Galan Almaraz, 30, of Monroe City, survived with injuries. The sheriff’s office said that Air Evac transported the man to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis to receive treatment. He remains in critical condition.

The car accident report released by the police placed the time of the crash around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22nd. Palma and Almaraz traveled on CH-10 about one mile east of State Highway 96 in a 1998 Chevrolet SUV.

The vehicle was westbound on CH-10 when it ran off the road on the north side for unknown reasons. The Chevrolet struck a tree, ejected the passenger onto the roadway, and partially hung the driver. There is no additional information.

Several factors cause a vehicle to go off its lane of travel. They include but are not limited to an animal sighting, debris, or sudden loss of brake function. A driver who swerves to avoid an animal or litter on the road is likely to lose control of the vehicle.

When the latter happens, avoid panicking and try to keep a level head. If the brake is damaged, engage the emergency brake, do not step on the gas pedal, and try to travel in the opposite direction.
