At the start of the past weekend, a volunteer for Congressman Danny Davis lost his life in a hit-and-run accident in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. A vehicle struck Mitchell Climons, 55, as he walked near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pulaski, on Friday.
In the accident report, the victim’s 95-year-old aunt, Hattie Evans, said he was trying to get back on the curb when the car struck him suddenly. The woman said she is unsure of the gender of the driver and the vehicle involved.
Climons’ brother, Terry, said that he hopes the Chicago Police find the suspect in time and get justice for his brother. The victim became popular volunteering, getting signatures, and passing out flyers for Davis’ campaign.
The CPD has not released any additional details on the accident, but they are actively searching for the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with credible information should contact the police at the station or use the listed line.
A hit-and-run offense under the Illinois Vehicle Code happens when a person involved in an accident — whether at fault or not — leaves the scene without reporting it to the appropriate authorities or rendering help to whoever needs it.
The justice system in the state frowns against drivers who commit the offense, and it carries strict penalties. The latter’s severity depends on whether it is a misdemeanor or felony, and convicted offenders face time in jail, payment of fines, and other punishments awarded by the court.
