The Tucson Police Department, Tucson, Arizona, identified the men who died in an auto-motorcycle collision on the east side of the city. On Wednesday, July 1st, they disclosed the victims’ names as Brandon Vincent Cleveland, 40, and Abner Tovar Ortiz, 26.
The accident report showed that the two died on Tuesday, June 30th, after their vehicles collided. It happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of East Speedway and North Van Buren Avenue, east of North Crayford Road.
The preliminary investigation uncovered that Cleveland rode a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Speedway at top speed, causing him to collide with the northbound 2010 Chrysler 300 driven by Ortiz on Van Buren. The two sustained fatal wounds, and the medics pronounced the two dead at the scene.
Further investigation revealed that the younger man ran a stop sign and was not wearing a seatbelt. The police also uncovered that the motorcycle the older victim was riding was reported stolen. There’s no additional information.
Under Arizona’s traffic regulating laws, an offense of failure to yield occurs when one vehicle fails to give the right of way to another. It is a traffic offense that sometimes leads to head-on collisions, rear-ends, or broadside collisions.
The law provides that when two vehicles enter or approach an intersection, the driver on the right should yield the right of way to the one on the left. A driver attempting to turn left must yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite position. A motorist at an entrance intersection with a stop sign must yield to all incoming vehicles not required to stop within the intersection.
