Denise Orellana Accused of Causing Crash After Trying to Rob Driver at Gunpoint

A woman has been arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at a driver and causing a car crash in west Phoenix on Saturday night.

The collision happened around 51st Avenue and McDowell Road.

The driver told police officers he was at a Circle K when a woman flagged him down. That woman was 27-year-old Denise Orellana but she told the man her name was Clarissa.

Phoenix police said Orellana asked the driver to borrow his phone and get a ride to Burger King. He agreed and she got into the car but as they drove, she reportedly pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

However, the driver hit the gas pedal and tried to get the gun. The firearm discharged and the bullet hit the center dash. The struggle was captured on a business’ surveillance video.

Police said the car swerved and hit another vehicle. Court documents reveal that following the crash, the driver grabbed the weapon, got out of the vehicle and handed the gun to an eyewitness.

Orellana got out of the car and told the witness the gun was hers. She got it and ran towards a McDonald’s. Security guards tackled her and helped the man to detain her until police arrived.

Court documents say Orellana admitted to trying to rob the driver, but she claimed the gun was his. She was also allegedly found with drug paraphernalia.

She was eventually taken to the Fourth Avenue Jail and booked for aggravated assault, armed robbery, drug possession, false report to law enforcement, and misconduct involving weapons.
