Police have identified the 17-year-old boy who was killed in a two-car wreck on Friday afternoon in Gilbert.
He has been identified as Stephen Luke Knight, a student of Higley High School.
The crash took place just before 3 p.m. near the school in the area close to Pecos and Recker Roads.
Knight was the sole occupant in a blue car and video showed the vehicle wrapped around a utility pole at the intersection. The car suffered significant damage. A black car had skidded to the side of the street.
Knight was rushed to hospital and later passed away.
Authorities said the three people who were in the black car did not suffer any serious injuries were expected to be okay. Two students, Dominick Gonzalez and Alex Mota said they knew the people in the other car since they were also pupils at Higley High School.
Gilbert Police Department Public Information Officer Brenda Carrasco said both vehicles were heading east when the collision occurred.
Police were not certain what caused the crash and the department’s traffic reconstruction team is investigating. However, they said there were no signs of impairment or speeding.
Meanwhile, several kids held a vigil near the crash scene on Saturday and the school invited teachers and students to gather at the school’s library.
Parent Kristina Reece said parents send their children to school every day and hope that those who drive travel to and from school safely.
Student Benjamin Elliott said no one was ever ready to see their friends go.
