Before a hit and run injured bicyclist Dave Dutra, he and his wife Julie had sold their Southern California home and bought an RV to visit all the US states. Due to that callous and careless driver, they haven’t gotten far.
Dave, a 67-year-old grandfather, was riding his bike to an auto parts store in Apache Junction on Thursday, December 26. He had his dog Sugar in a basket behind him.
A white car was following a slow-moving truck. At Meridian Road and Southern Avenue the white car veered onto the shoulder in an effort to pass the truck on the right, and ran into Dave.
Both he and Sugar flew off the bike on impact.
Then, say witnesses, the white car swerved into oncoming traffic and sped off.
The crash, and Dutra’s subsequent landing on the pavement caused a concussion, torn spleen, and a broken wrist. He also had numerous cuts and bruises. Doctors had to perform around 100 stitches to reattach his ear.
Doctors treated and released him, but his pain was so intense that he returned to the hospital days later. While there, he had a stroke.
Days later though, Dutra’s pain is so intense, he returned to Banner Desert Medical Center, where doctors say he suffered a stroke, which may have been brought on by the concussion.
Police say all they know about the hit and run vehicle is that it was a white car, with the passenger side rear view mirror broken off. If you live in the Apache Junction area, and know if a car that fits that description, please contact the Apache Junction Police Department.
The Dutra’s dog, Sugar, was not seriously hurt.
