22-year-old wrong-way driver Kevin Chacon would need a car accident attorney after crashing into an unmarked police car in Scottsdale, Arizona. On Thursday, June 4th, the Scottsdale Police Department released details of the Wednesday, June 3rd accident.
The SPD Sgt. Ben Hoster said in a press release that the incident happened late at night on the northbound lanes of Loop 101 Pima Freeway near Cactus Road. Around 10:30 p.m., Chacon was heading south in a black pickup truck. The vehicle then collided with the police car, leaving it with minor damage.
The suspect left the freeway and kept on driving east on Shea Boulevard. Hoster said troopers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety saw the truck at 113th Street and La Linda, and successfully stopped him. The police took Chacon into custody and charged him with extreme DUI, reckless driving, and other undisclosed offenses.
Under the traffic laws of Arizona, a person who drives the wrong way on a controlled-access highway commits the offense of wrong-way driving. A violator is subject to a civil penalty of five hundred dollars, and additionally, the person would attend and complete an approved traffic survival school tutorial section.
The latter helps to improve the safety habits of a driver. The law also defines wrong-way driving to mean the vehicular movement that is in a direction opposing traffic’s proper flow. It does not include a median crossing, where a motor vehicle comes to a stop facing the wrong way.
Those arrested for wrong-way driving and DUI-related crashes should hire a car accident attorney to represent their interests.
