Officials in Arizona have confirmed that the three people who were killed in a crash on Interstate 19 were related.
The accident occurred north of Nogales around 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday.
The driver, 18-year-old Nicole Diaz of Nogales, died at the scene along with 30-year-old Dayton resident Roxanna Diaz, and an unnamed 17-year-old girl who was also from Nogales.
The state Department of Public Safety did not reveal exactly how the deceased were related.
However, the department said the three were killed when their vehicle rear-ended another car in the area of Tumacacori Interchange Road.
A fourth passenger who was not named was taken to a hospital. Their condition was not released.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle that was struck did not suffer any injuries.
It is not known if anyone involved was wearing a seat belt. However, the authorities say it was raining heavily at the time of the crash.
The crash occurred as traffic slowed down because of another accident further up the interstate.
Interstate-19 northbound was closed at Santa Gertrudis Road for a few hours after the incident.
According to the 2018 Arizona Motor Vehicle Crash Facts published by the Arizona Department of Transportation, an average of 2.77 people were killed each day. This meant an individual was killed every eight hours and 39 minutes.
Meanwhile, 146 people suffered injuries each day with an injury occurring every nine minutes and 51 seconds.
Motor vehicle crashes led to $19.349 billion in economic losses to Arizona in 2018.
