A man from Surprise, 11 miles from Glendale, Arizona, got arrested and charged for causing an accident resulting in grievous bodily harm. The police on Wednesday, March 4th, released his name as Bogdan Pop, 31.
Pop, originally hailing from Romania, is facing charges for felony aggravated assault after his vehicle pinned and crushed the leg of a teenager identified as a 19-year-old male. The accident happened on February 27th, down a residential street near 51st Avenue and Union Hills Drive, northwest Phoenix.
According to the police, there were several cars parked on both sides of the way when Pop crashed into the back of a pickup truck. The teenager was sitting on the rear, as he waited to offload furniture from the read-end of the car.
When Pop crashed into the vehicle, the young man got pinned between the truck and his car, thereby crushing his leg. It took the effort of fire crews to extract the teenager, and they used two tourniquets to prevent blood loss and save his life.
The young man was barely hanging on to life when he got to the hospital, and his right leg was entirely crushed. The left was less injured, and the doctors were able to save it and prevent amputation.
The police on inspection of Pop at the scene found that he had bloodshot and watery eyes, making them conclude he was driving under the influence. A breathalyzer test found that the driver’s BAC was at .184 percent, way above the legal limit of .08 percent.
Pop was booked into jail, with his bond set at $35 000. A felony aggravated assault carries a four-year sentence in state prison, and the victim can also bring a personal injury lawsuit.
