Raymond Zamora Killed When Car Falls Off Cliff Near Tucson

Authorities have identified the man killed late Saturday night when his vehicle went off a cliff near Tucson.

Raymond Zamora, 22, of Tucson, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which occurred just off Catalina Highway, according to car accident reports. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department did not report any additional injuries.

Authorities were called to mile marker 13 on Catalina Highway at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate a report of a vehicle off the roadway. Investigators ultimately located a vehicle that had fallen “several hundred yards” down a steep canyon, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.

Car accident reports state that it took emergency personnel several hours to reach the vehicle as a result of the “dangerous terrain” and adverse weather conditions. They found Zamora, but he apparently had died as a result of trauma from the crash, according to authorities.

The investigation into the incident by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is ongoing. However, authorities said they believe impairment likely contributed to the crash.

Assisting at the scene were search-and-rescue deputies, the Southern Arizona Rescue Association, the Mount Lemmon Fire Department and the Rural Metro Fire Department, the press release stated.

Several people posted condolences on a social media page linked to Zamora.

“Your mindset and heart (were) truly (those of) someone beautiful and motivating,” wrote one friend.

“You were just such a fun, positive, happy, wonderful guy who would always make sure everyone around you was good and having fun and staying positive,” wrote another.
