Two people were involved in a boating accident in Lake Havasu, Arizona, earlier this week, which left Richard Keith Williams dead, 66, and another victim in critical condition. Accident reports released by the Mohave County Sheriff Department confirmed that the accident occurred on Wednesday evening, June 3.
According to the reports, the incident involved two boats that collided while sailing on the lake, sending their occupants overboard. The MCSO recorded that the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two boats were moving at an estimated speed of 40 mph on Lake Havasu. One of them was a 1996 15 foot Bayliner boat heading southeast, and the other was a 1994 22 foot Larson boat traveling northwest.
The MCSO also reported that the southeast bound vessel, conveying two people, and the Larson boat collided near Site 6, knocking the boaters into the lake.
When the Division of Boating Safety Boating Deputies responded at the scene, they found Williams beside a large debris field. He was unresponsive when they pulled him out of the water, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Another victim, rescued by a witness, ended up in critical condition, and the emergency response crew transported him to a hospital. Investigators believe drugs and alcohol contributed to the crash that claimed Williams’ life, but the possibility is under investigation. Speed and the lighting are also possible contributing factors, the sheriff department shared in the accident reports.
