A Phoenix woman faces multiple criminal charges for allegedly being drunk behind the wheel Monday afternoon when she crashed her vehicle into a fence while transporting an infant in the back seat. Sussan Lira, 33, faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence and child endangerment, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Court documents don’t indicate whether any other vehicles were involved or whether any injuries were reported. The records don’t say whether Lira has yet retained the services of a drunk driving attorney.

Police said they were called to the area near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road at about 3:30 p.m. Monday to investigate a report of a vehicle that apparently had crashed into a metal fence. As officers arrived on scene, they reportedly smelled alcohol and they also found empty bottles inside Lira’s vehicle.

A witness allegedly saw the crash occur and pulled a baby girl, who had been placed in a broken car seat that was not property restrained, from the vehicle. Local media outlets reported that the girl was placed in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Services.

The Associated Press reported that Sussan Lira had difficulty standing and refused to submit to a preliminary breath test. She reportedly admitted drinking prior to the crash.

It wasn’t clear Tuesday what caused Lira to lose control of her vehicle and strike the fence. She likely will need the services of a drunk driving attorney to represent her at upcoming court proceedings.
