On Monday, June 8th, a court sitting in Tucson, Arizona, sentenced to prison the female driver, who killed a bicyclist. Yanibra Moreno received 8.5 years in state prison for her role in the 2018 accident.
The accident report showed that the then-20-year-old suspect was driving the wrong way down the mountain road when she collided head-on and fatally injured 73-year-old Richard Ellwanger. The latter was riding a bicycle, and despite having a helmet on, he died two hours after the accident in a hospital.
Moreno tried to flee the scene after the collision, but her 2002 Lexus GS300 struck a boulder on the roadway. The woman and an unidentified passenger then alighted from the car and left the area on foot.
The Tucson Police Department caught Moreno and booked her into the Pima County Jail. A blood test proved that she had a blood alcohol content of .40%, which is four times above the legal limit. The police charged her with a count of manslaughter, two counts of leaving the scene after causing an accident resulting in death, and seven counts of aggravated DUI while driving the wrong way on the highway.
On April 4th, Moreno pleaded guilty to the charges against her, and she will serve 7-year probation after completing her sentence. There is currently no information on when she would begin her incarceration.
Accident reports show that most people involved in motor vehicle crashes panic and flee the scene due to fear. Those engaged in collisions should remain at the accident site, call 911, and try to render help to any injured person.
