Details Emerge About German Ordonez’s Death in Auto Crash While Eluding Police in Salinas Valley

A man died in the Salinas Valley area of California while fleeing patrol officers in a motor vehicle, and encountering a rollover crash. According to the accident reports released on Friday, June 12, by the California Highway Patrol, German Ordonez, 20, of Soledad, died in the single-vehicle traffic wreck.

As reported by the CHP King City Area, the incident played out just before midnight on Friday, June 5. The crash happened on Los Coches Road, a few miles north of Thorne Road, shortly after 11:33 p.m.

The incident began when officers with the Soledad Police Department spotted the victim driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup on a Soledad highway. The lawmen attempted to make an enforcement stop on the motorist for a suspected vehicle code violation. However, Ordonez failed to oblige the officers but fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

The SPD deputies immediately followed in pursuit as Ordonez led them in a chase through the city. Officers chased him through Highway 101, and then onto southbound Arroyo Seco Road before joining Los Coches. Police said the driver exceeded speeds of 80 mph while in flight before he eventually crashed the pickup.

The CHP said Ordonez was unable to negotiate a right-hand curve, and that caused the truck to veer into a dirt shoulder. It then crashed into a ditch in a vineyard located off the roadway and overturned onto its roof. The driver suffered injuries in the wreck, and medics pronounced him dead after midnight on Saturday, June 6, as confirmed in the accident reports.

The CHP continues to investigate the case, while the SPD is looking into the pursuit.
