Beverly A. Whitkanack, 78, was killed in a head-on collision in Edgar County, Illinois.
The crash occurred before 2 p.m. last Sunday. Whitkanack, originally of Paris, Illinois, was traveling east on Highway 150 near Edgar County Road 2100 E., when her vehicle, a red 2009 Chrysler, was hit head-on by another vehicle, a blue 2013 Chrysler driven by Carrie Lee Collier.
Collier, 39, also of Paris, had been traveling west on Highway 150 when her car veered into opposing lanes and struck Whitkanack’s van. Authorities are unsure what caused the accident, although it is reported that Whitkanack unsuccessfully tried to avoid colliding with Collier’s car. Police also say that there are charges pending in the case.
Whitkanack was pronounced dead at the scene. Collier was hospitalized for her injuries, as were two minor children who were in Whitkanack’s vehicle at the time of the crash. All people involved were wearing seatbelts, and there were airbags deployed in both vehicles.
