A man was killed when his car crashed into a tow truck in Lockport, Illinois, on Monday.
The crash occurred at around 6:20 p.m. Armando Piemonte, 45, of Chicago, was traveling south North State Street in Lockport, when his car, a gray Chrysler Town and Country minivan, crossed the center line of the street and collided head-on with a tow truck driver headed in the opposite direction.
The accident occurred in the 500 block of North State Street, which was closed for over four hours after the crash.
Piemonte was trapped in his vehicle following the accident. Authorities were able to extricate him and take him to the Silver Cross Emergency Room in New Lenox, where he died from his injuries at 7:16 p.m. The tow truck driver, an unidentified 55-year-old resident of Lockport, was also hospitalized, although his injuries are non-life-threatening. No other people or cars were involved in the accident.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. It is not believed that the driver of the tow truck was driving while distracted or under the influence. Police are reviewing toxicology reports and phone records from Piemonte to determine whether he was at fault. It was also raining at the time of the crash.
