Pacific Palisades Motorcycle Accident with Big Blue Bus Victim Identified as Patrick Chilton Odell

In a tragic motorcycle accident in the Pacific Palisades last Tuesday, November 27, 2012, a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus collided with a motorcycle resulting a fatal crash on Sunset Boulevard.

Patrick Chilton Odell, 25, of Van Nuys, was identified as the motorcycle rider. He was headed westbound on Sunset Blvd. on his  2008 Honda motorcycle when a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus made a left turn from Marquez Ave. The collision occurred at the intersection of Sunset Blvd and Marquez Ave.

WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CAUSING THE CRASH?

There are reports that investigators are currently still investigating the causes of the crash. LAPD traffic investigators did however indicate that speed may have been a factor, however, a final police report probably won’t be prepared for several weeks. It is important to know that a complete and thorough, preferably independent investigation should take place to determine all contributing factors and those responsible for this tragic crash.

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

It is absolutely critical that an independent investigation take place to properly preserve critical evidence, seek witness statements and determine who was at fault for this fatal crash. With combined legal experience of more than 35+ years in representing victims and families of motorcycle accidents, the attorneys at our sponsoring law firm are dedicated to aggressively representing those who have been involved in catastrophic accidents.

BIG BLUE BUS RESPONSIBILITY

The Santa Monica Big Blue Bus is a public bus company. In California, public transportation companies like the Big Blue Bus are known as “common carriers” and are therefore held to a higher standard of care than others. The circumstances of this tragic crash are still unknown other than a few reports which are not conclusive. The Big Blue Bus has several cameras on board all its buses and its important that immediate action be taken by an experienced bus accident lawyer in order to obtain and preserve those videos.

POTENTIAL DANGEROUS INTERSECTION

Odell was headed Westbound on Sunset Boulevard on his way to work, at Gladstone’s in Malibu. The Big Blue Bus was headed Southbound on Marquez Ave. and was negotiating a left-hand turn. From the looks of the photos and a scene inspection, it is a rather peculiar intersection with multiple traffic signals and signs. While all potential scenarios must be investigated, certainly an intersection study should be done immediately. Should the city or governmental agency be responsible for this crash, it is very important to immediately seek the assistance of a lawyer who can help navigate the complex process.

STRICT TIME LIMITS TO FILE CLAIM

In California, there are strict time limits in which to file a claim for injuries or wrongful death claims. If the claim is against a governmental entity, such as a bus company, then the time limits are 6-months from the date of the incident.
