Eugene Figures, 21, died at a hospital shortly after the crash, which occurred at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday in Chicago’s Jeffery Manor neighborhood, the Chicago Police Department reported. Two others were hospitalized in critical condition, according to car accident reports.
Authorities said Figures was driving south in the 9500 block of South Jeffery Avenue at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday when he ran a red light. Figures’ vehicle collided with another sedan in the intersection, car accident reports state.
Figures was transported by emergency medical personnel to Christ Medical Center in Oaklawn, authorities said. He later was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck.
Figures’ passenger, identified in car accident reports only as a 20-year-old woman, was taken to the same hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, identified only as a 30-year-old man, also was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Chicago police.
Updated condition reports for the man and woman weren’t available Monday afternoon.
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Unit is investigating the incident. Authorities have not said whether they believe either driver was under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the wreck, nor have they said whether other factors, such as speed, are thought to have contributed.
