Infant Lazel Bond Dies After 2-Car Wreck Monday On Chicago Expressway

– An infant died at a hospital not long after a multi-vehicle crash Monday morning on Chicago’s Dan Ryan expressway, authorities reported Wednesday.

One-year-old Lazel Bond, of Homewood, died at Comer Children’s Hospital, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported. Three other people were injured in the wreck, which occurred just after midnight Monday, according to car accident reports.

Authorities said Lazel was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling north on Interstate 94 at about 12:10 a.m. Monday. At some point, the vehicle collided another northbound car, Illinois State Police reported.

The car in which Lazel was riding was pushed off the road and up an embankment, where it struck a concrete wall, car accident reports state. Three other people in the vehicle – a 26-year-old man who was driving and two female passengers, one age 24 and the other 23 – were hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening, troopers said.

No occupants of the second vehicle suffered injuries that required hospitalization, according to car accident reports. Crews working at the scene after the wreck closed the expressway for about four hours.

Lazel was taken to the children’s hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Authorities said she ultimately succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. Monday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Authorities have not said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors like the use of intoxicants or excessive speed. No charges or citations have been announced.
