Jaimee Chandler Arrested After Chicago Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed William Merritt

– Authorities have arrested a man for his alleged role in a fatal hit-and-run wreck earlier this month on Chicago’s West Side.

Jaimee Chandler, 25, is being held on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Police said he fatally struck a 57-year-old man with his vehicle on May 6 and then fled the scene.

Chandler will need the services of an experienced car injury attorney as he makes his way through the criminal justice system.

Chicago police said Chandler was driving in the 2400 block of West Congress Parkway just before 9 p.m. May 6 when he came up behind a car that had pulled over so the driver could offer food to a pair of pedestrians. Chandler then drove around the stopped vehicle and crashed into William Merritt, of Lincoln Park, according to authorities.

Chandler then allegedly continued driving a short distance before parking the car and fleeing on foot. Merritt was pronounced dead from his injuries at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said Chandler called police the next day to report that his car had been stolen while he went to purchase marijuana. However, he admitted his role in the incident when questioned by Chicago police, authorities reported.

Chandler made a court appearance Tuesday, when his bond was set at $200,000. He is set to make another court appearance June 8, when he likely will be represented by an experienced car injury attorney.
