Damien Sons Seriously Injured In Clay County Wreck

Authorities said an Illinois man was seriously injured in an early-morning single-vehicle crash Thursday in Clay County.

Damien Sons, 25, of Xenia, was airlifted to an area hospital to be treated for major injuries after the crash, which occurred just after 4 a.m. Thursday, according to car accident reports from the Illinois State Police. Sons’ vehicle was the only one involved in the wreck and no additional injuries were reported.

Troopers said Sons was driving on Cherry Bark Lane near Hanging Rock Road at about 4:10 a.m. Thursday when he lost control of his vehicle. The van went off the roadway and crashed into a tree, according to car accident reports.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, and Sons was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of injuries authorities described as life-threatening. An updated condition report wasn’t available Thursday evening.

It is unclear from car accident reports released by the Illinois State Police on Thursday what investigators believe led to the crash. They have not said whether factors like intoxication, speed or inattentive driving are thought to have contributed to the incident, nor have they said whether anyone else was in Sons’ van at the time of the wreck.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, troopers reported. Additional details likely will be included in future car accident reports or public records related to the investigation.
