Houston Police Officer Jason Knox Killed in Helicopter Crash

One of two police officers onboard a Houston police helicopter was killed when the aircraft crashed on Saturday.

According to accident reports and official word from the police, the deceased is Tactical Flight Officer Jason Knox.

The pilot, who suffered critical injuries, has not been named.

The helicopter crashed at an apartment complex around 2 a.m. The two were flown to hospital where Knox succumbed to his injuries.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said Knox had a wife and two children.

The pilot underwent surgery and the police said they hoped he would survive even though his injuries were serious.

No one on the ground was injured.

It is not known if any of the parties involved will seek advice from a helicopter accident lawyer.

The helicopter had been called to help with a search for bodies in a bayou. However, the police chief said the tip was probably bogus.

The officers were trapped in the wreckage until firefighters cut them out after working for about an hour.

Acevedo said the firefighters’ work was phenomenal.

He noted that while the wreckage was significant, it didn’t catch fire and the helicopter didn’t strike any occupied apartment buildings.

The police department will be suspending flights for the time being. The Texas Department of Public Safety and Harris County Sheriff’s Office will provide temporary flight support.

Acevedo said shots rang out across the street from the crash scene around 3 a.m. and six people were taken into custody.

However, he made it clear that police had no information to suggest that the helicopter was taken down by hostile action.

More information could be provided in later accident reports.
