A man sustained critical injuries in a collision between a bicycle and a semi-trailer. The incident took place on the morning of Friday, April 3. Semi driver was ticketed in the crash which means that a bicycle accident attorney may be able to help the injured bicyclist seek damages.

According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the crash occurred nearly a mile from the town of Mahomet in Illinois. Authorities were notified about it at around 9:30 a.m.

The accident came about when a semi-trailer driver attempted to overtake a bicyclist. The bicyclist was traveling northbound on Illinois 47 at the County Road 2400. As the semi driver tried to overtake the bicycle, he ended up hitting the bicycle instead. The bicyclist crashed and sustained critical injuries. He was identified as David Powell, 46, of Mahomet.

Powell was rushed to the Carle Foundation Hospital where he remains under treatment for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi was identified as Roman Sydoruk, 41, of Michigan City, Indiana. Preliminary investigations show that Sydoruk’s negligence contributed to the incident. He was ticketed by the ISP for improper overtaking.

A number of local and state bodies responded to the bicycle accident. These include the Mahomet Police, Cornbelt Fire Protection District and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office among others.

Troopers closed down the Illinois 47 as authorities conducted cleanup and investigations on site. The investigations concluded in a few hours and the route was reopened nearly five hours later.

Given the negligence of the semi driver, the injured bicyclist may be able to seek compensatory damages for the personal injury caused. This is often possible with the help of a bicycle accident attorney in Illinois.
