Crash Near Effingham Kills Semi Driver Richard Dreher

A man lost his life in a tragic crash that took place just outside Effingham over the weekend. The victim was identified by the troopers as Richard Dreher, 66, of Colmar, Pennsylvania as per the initial accident reports.

According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the fatal incident took place on Sunday, August 9. Dreher was traveling southbound on the I-57 and was riding a semi. For reasons that are not yet known, Dreher appears to have lost control of his vehicle.

The semi veered away from the roadway and turned left. It then collided with a construction sign at a high speed. The sheer impact of the collision then sent the semi reeling back to the roadway and across all the southbound lanes. After crossing the southbound lanes, the semi left the roadway towards the right and came to rest in the ditch on the right side of the roadway.

Richard Dreher sustained serious injuries in the crash. Once the paramedics and first responders had been notified, Dreher was rushed to the HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Efforts were made to revive him but these failed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

ISP continues to investigate the incident. The focus of the investigations at this point is to determine exactly how and why the incident occurred. Preliminary investigations show that Dreher may have suffered a medical emergency just before the crash which caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Subsequent accident reports may confirm whether this was the actual cause.
