Illinois State Police has identified Jeffery Smith, 50, of Gary, Indiana as the driver of one of the two vehicles involved in a fatal crash. The accident took place on Thursday, March 19 in Washington County.
According to the details shared by ISP, the two-vehicle accident involved a semi tractor-trailer and Chevrolet Malibu. It happened on the Interstate 64 late in the evening. The authorities were notified of the crash at around 8:30 p.m.
The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu has not been identified by the authorities so far. Jeffery Smith was the driver of the semi. The crash was caused when the female driver of the Malibu collided with the left rear corner of the semi. The collision took place at a fairly high speed. The semi was crossing another slower vehicle at the time while the Malibu was traveling at a fairly high speed.
In the wake of the crash, the Malibu collided with the center median after hitting the semi. It then rolled several times before coming to rest. As the vehicle rolled, the driver of Malibu was ejected from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Smith sustained no injuries in the crash and remained safe. The identity of the Malibu driver who lost her life in the collision has not been released yet. The area around the crash site remains closed for several hours and the site was cleared by 12:30 a.m. ISP continues to investigate the incident. Preliminary investigations have hinted that speeding on the part of the Malibu driver may have caused the crash.
