An Illinois man faces multiple years in prison for allegedly fleeing the scene after he struck and injured a pedestrian before crashing into a McHenry grocery store, authorities said.
John K. Petko, 48, of McHenry, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of failure to stop at the scene of a crash involving a personal injury, the McHenry Police Department reported. He is accused striking a 60-year-old man with his vehicle, causing leg injuries, according to car accident reports.
Police said they were called to a grocery store on North Richmond Road at about 1 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a report of a hit-and-run crash. A driver apparently had crashed into the grocery store’s entrance after striking a man, whose name was not included in car accident reports.
The driver then fled the scene in his vehicle.
The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Authorities do not believe the wounds are life-threatening.
Police said they found the suspect vehicle in a parking lot at Peterson Park. Witnesses told investigators they saw a man, later identified as Petko, running from his vehicle and onto the trail in the park.
Police searched the area, eventually locating Petko in the 4200 block of West Elm Street. He was arrested on the criminal charge, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison upon conviction.
Authorities did not say what caused Petko to lose control of his vehicle and crash in the grocery store parking lot. It’s unclear if other charges or citations are pending.
