Three people sustained non-life threatening injuries in a distracted driving crash that took place in the Effingham County. The incident occurred on April 13, Monday. It happened at night and was reported to the authorities around 8:15 p.m. as per preliminary accident reports.
According to the details released by the Illinois State Police, the two vehicles collided with each other on the US 40 only a few miles from Effingham. Vehicles involved in the crash were identified as a 2005 Black Jeep SUV and a 2014 White-and-Blue Ford E350 emergency vehicle.
The SUV was traveling eastbound on the US 40 when the crash occurred. Close to the County Road 1075, the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle. It then veered across the center line. The Ford emergency vehicle was traveling westbound in the oncoming lane. The wrong-way SUV collided with the emergency vehicle.
The driver of the SUV was identified as Joshua Bobbitt, 21, of Effingham, Illinois. Bobbitt later stated in his statement that he was distracted from inside the vehicle and that this momentary distraction led to the crash.
The emergency vehicle had two occupants at the time of the crash, including the driver and a passenger. The driver was identified as Krystal Garrett, 34, of Windsor, Illinois. ISP identified the passenger as Steven Sherwood, 53, of Greenup, Illinois.
All the three individuals involved in the crash sustained non-life threatening injuries. Once the first responders arrived on the scene of the accident, they were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Following preliminary investigations, Joshua Bobbitt was cited by ISP for driving an uninsured vehicle and improper change of lane as per the accident reports.
