Mateusz Poniatowski Killed In Cook County Crash

Authorities said a motorcyclist died from injuries sustained in a Cook County wreck Thursday night.

Mateusz Poniatowski, 26, of Elmwood Park, was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the wreck, according to car accident reports. It’s unclear whether any other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Few details about the crash were reported by authorities. According to information from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Poniatowski was involved with a crash with a vehicle at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the 7800 block of Belmont Avenue.

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office determined Poniatowski died of injuries as a result of a motorcycle hitting an automobile. The death was deemed accidental, according to car accident reports.

Police did not respond to requests from media outlets seeking details about the incident. Authorities have not released information about the other vehicle involved in the wreck, nor have they said whether any citations were issued or charges filed.

Friends of Poniatowski started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money in his memory. The effort had raised nearly $1,300 toward a $10,000 goal in its first hour Saturday.

Organizers said they “lost our great and good friend … who died in a traffic accident and is no longer with us.”

“I would like to ask you for help,” organizers wrote in the post. “I know that (these) times are hard for everyone, but every dollar counts. We would like to help him on the way back home – Poland. Thank you for all your help and donations. “
