The most recent update on the condition of a Perry County Humane Society volunteer indicates that not much has changed from the initial reports. 68-year-old Dane Caupert was on his way home with a van full of rescue animals on April 14 when an accident occurred near Springfield, Illinois.
Not a lot of information has been released regarding the accident, only that the van is no longer in working order, and Caupert is still in critical condition. The update released on April 17 advised that Caupert had sustained a lot of head trauma, facial lacerations, and a broken arm in the crash. The doctors had to insert a drain to relieve the pressure on his brain.
Even though the doctors have taken Caupert off of the sedation, he has not woke up yet. The doctors have advised that it is a waiting game at this point to see if he will regain consciousness.
Caupert is a vital part of the shelter. He has been a volunteer for the last ten years. He drives to kill-shelters in the southern part of the state and transports the animals to no-kill shelters so that they can be adopted.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to replace the van so that the transport of the animals can continue. At this time, there has not been one set up for Caupert or his family for the medical bills. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the car accident has been painful for the family.
